Campo Imperatore is a plateau of glacial origin, surrounded by the municipalities of Barisciano, Calascio, Carapelle Calvisio, Castelvecchio Calvisio, Castel del Monte, L’Aquila and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, in the province of L’Aquila. It is one of Italy’s biggest uplands, 18km long and 8km wide. In fine weather it is a popular destination for cyclists, and has been often been a leg in the Giro d’Italia cycling competition. It is also the starting point for scaling some of the Gran Sasso range’s most famous peaks.
